Voxels: Like pixels, but 3D.

Voxels can be thought of as building blocks for creating 3D digital content - much like pixels are used to build 2D images and graphics. Ephtracy’s MagicaVoxel is by far the most popular voxel editor, and my preferred tool.

My goal for this project was to create digital representations of various spaces in my home using voxels. Colors, lighting, and furniture arrangements are represented as accurately as possible with voxels - which has been surprisingly helpful in helping me to gain a new perspective on my home and the design language used therein.

Capturing the smallest details possible is one of the most satisfying aspects of creating voxel art. Here, you can notice art on the wall, details in the wood of texture of the TV stand, and keen eyes can likely even make out what brand the speakers are based on their design.

One of my favorite things about this room (the Lounge) is the Phillips Hue Gradient Lightstrip on the back of the display, which is synchronized with content via the Hue Play HDMI Sync Box. The effect is hard to convey with text, but basically whatever color is displayed near the edges of the screen is re-created in the same general area of the light-strip - effectively extending the content our into your peripheral vision. This makes for a much more immersive and exciting movie watching or gaming experience - bathing the space in the vivid colors of whatever explosion or laser blasts or magical spells are happening on screen at any given time.

office detail

One of the most fun & whimsical pieces in our home is this little llama-shaped rattan side table in Aricka’s office (originally from Urban Outfitters but appears to be discontinued). To add a bit of stability for a planter, we topped it with a circular marble remnant.
